A Pulmonology / critical care physician or chest medicine doctor as sometimes called will diagnose and treat lung and respiratory related problems and diseases. Pulmonologist work closely with and many times perform many of the same procedures as an intensive care physician. More times than not a pulmonologist will have critical care training. If surgery is required, then a Pulmonologist will refer the patient to a Thoracic or Cardiothoracic surgeon. Pulmonologists can have strenuous call schedules, so many times they will work by 12 hour shifts, and be apart of a group. The minimum educational training for a Pulmonology doctor is a four-year bachelors degree, usually in a science, four years of medical school, three year residency in internal medicine, and at least two year fellowship in Pulmonology. Many Pulmonologists do an extra fellowship in Critical care and sleep medicine. Compensation for a Pulmonology physician can be somewhere between $155,000 to $250,000 a year depending on location, experience and practice setup.
